Salty Map Dough

Salty Map Dough

1 1/2 cups flour

1 1/2 cups salt

1 1/8 cups water

  • Mix flour and salt together.
  • Stir water in slowly until resembles bread dough. 
  • Use immediately.
  • You can jazz it up by painting with tempera paint.

Modeling Clay

Modeling Clay
1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup cornstarch
3/4 cup water
food coloring
  • In a medium saucepan over low heat, combine baking soda and cornstarch.
  • Mix well and add water.
  • Continue to heat for 7-10 minutes, stirring frequently, until mixture is the consistency of mashed potatoes.
  • CONTINUE TO STIR–as mixture will thicken very quickly.
  • Cover a flat surface (counter, kitchen table) with additional cornstarch.
  • Spread mixture over cornstarch and knead by hand until mixture turns into a workable clay.
  • Divide clay into several sections.
  • Make a hole in the cneter of each seciton and add a few drops of food coloring to the hole in each section.
  • If desired, use a different color for each section.
  • Knead the sections by hand until the color has distributed throughout.
  • YOU ARE NOW FREE TO HAVE FUN!
  • Place any leftover clay in a ziplock bag and refrigerate.
  • Use leftover clay within 3 days.

For a permanent sculpture, let the modeled clay air dry overnight.

Finger Paints #1

Finger Paints #1
1 cup all-purpose flour
4 cups water (as 1 cup then 3 cups)
food coloring
  • Compine flour and 1 cup water into large saucepan. Stir in water until smooth.
  • Add the remaining 3 cups water and place over medium heat.
  • Bring the mixture to a sustained boil (can’t be stirred down) for 1 minute then remove from heat.
  • Let cool.
  • Pour into 3 or 4 separate cups (paper cups, plastic bowls, etc.) and add food coloring. These cups are just for mixing paint.
  • Store the paint in a air-tight plastic bowl, cup, or large ziploc bag.
  • Paint on wet or dry butcher paper or finger paint paper.

Sticker Glue

Sticker Glue
1/4 of a 3 oz. package of unflavored gelatin
1 Tbs. cold water
3 Tbs. boiling water
1/2 tsp. white peppermint extract
2 drops of boric acid solution
  • Sprinkle gelatin in cold water to soften.
  • Pour into boiling water, stirring until dissolved.
  • Add the remaining ingredients and mix very well.
  • To use glue, brush thinly onto back of sticker design. When applying to paper, gently moisten.
  • Store unused glue in a small jar or something with a lid.
  • Warm in a pan to turn to a liquid again.

Funny Putty

Funny Putty
1/2 cup liquid starch
1/2 cup school glue
  • Mix starch and glue together
  • Store in either a Ziploc bag, a plastic Easter egg or an empty film canister.

Face Paints

Face Paints
6 tsp corn starch; divided
3 tsp. water; divided
3 tsp cold cream; divided
Food coloring
6 cup muffin tin
  1. In each cup of the muffin tin, put 1 tsp. of cornstarch, 1/2 tsp. each of cold cream and water.
  2. Add different color food coloring to each cup. Mix very well.
  3. Use paintbrush or a cosmetic sponge to apply.

Finger Paints

Finger Paints
2 cups cold water
3 tsp sugar
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 Tbs. light corn syrup
Liquid food coloring
Small bowls or jars with lids
  1. In a small pot, stir water, sugar and cornstarch. Whisk over low heat for 5 minutes until mixture is thick and clear.
  2. Stir in corn syrup. Pour paint into small containers with lids.
  3. Add a few drops of food coloring to each and shake until color is well mixed.

ok…i should remind everyone that when you do start making these recipes, you will need storage containers: baggies, plastic storage containers, glass jars, etc. Be sure to have plenty of these on hand before you start your kid kraft kooking!!!

Soap crayons

Soap Crayons
1 cup unscented soap flakes or a bar of soap, grated
2 Tbs. of hot water
Liquid food coloring
  1. Mix soap and hot water in a plastic bowl, then divide into small bowls, one for each color. Add 12 drops of liquid food coloring to each bowl.
  2. Stir mixture until it thickens and becomes hard to stir. Scoop up by the tablespoonful and roll into thick log shapes. Let dry 1-2 days.

Playdough

Playdough
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 cup water
1 tsp. cooking oil
liquid food coloring
  1. In a heavy saucepan, combine four, salt, and cream of tartar. Pour the water and oil into the dry mixture and stir well.
  2. Cook over medium heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring all the time, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the pan. Remove from the heat.
  3. Let it cool in a bowl covered with a wet cloth for a minute. Add 10-12 drops of liquid food coloring and knead until smooth and blended. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for several weeks.
